Story Behind the Art:
In the world of Persian weaving, the name Sarouk refers to rugs crafted in Arak, its surrounding villages, and the Farahan plains of central Iran—an area long admired for its exceptional weaving tradition. During the 19th century, Sarouk rugs were known for their intricate allover designs such as Herati and Gul Hennai patterns, woven with about 100 asymmetric knots per square inch on durable cotton foundations.
By the late 1800s, influenced by the grandeur of Tabriz carpets, local weavers transitioned toward a more formal, medallion-centered style characterized by symmetry and refined floral motifs. After World War I, however, Sarouk artisans revolutionized their art once again—introducing a more open and airy composition featuring graceful, detached floral sprays scattered elegantly across the field. This innovation became the signature look of Sarouk rugs, distinguishing them in global markets and establishing their enduring appeal among collectors.
Today, the timeless Sarouk aesthetic continues to inspire rug makers worldwide, with Sarouk-style pieces produced not only in Iran but also in India, Romania, and Pakistan, each paying homage to the rich heritage and artistic legacy of Persian craftsmanship.
