A superb late-19th-century Shirvan whose design vocabulary is more commonly encountered in Shirvan and Kuba Soumaks. The octagonal medallion-and-panel layout, the dense scattering of small rosettes, and the talismanic latch-hook devices all echo the structural geometry of flatwoven Soumak covers which is here translated into a finely knotted pile format with striking clarity. This crossover of motifs is both unusual and highly collectible, reflecting the deep interchange between pile-weaving and flatweave traditions in the East Caucasus.
The palette is classic Shirvan with rich madder red, deep indigo, soft camel, and crisp ivory highlights. These saturated natural dyes, combined with the rug’s tight weave and short, velvety pile, give the composition a jewel-like precision. Despite its complexity, the field remains beautifully balanced, with the rosette-filled brick-red ground providing warmth and space.
A sophisticated border system frames the interior with angular vinework and star-like blossoms on an ivory ground that is contained within two narrow guards of alternating diagonal elements. The entire structure reads as architectural yet lively, a hallmark of Shirvan’s most refined workshops.
In very good condition with some old but properly done restoration.
