Story Behind the Art: Within the rug trade, the term Sarouk refers to carpets woven in Arak, the surrounding villages, and the plains of Farahan in central Iran—an area historically celebrated for weaving mastery. During the 19th century, Sarouk rugs frequently displayed intricate all-over patterns such as Herati and Gul Hennai, often woven at approximately 100 asymmetric knots per square inch on durable cotton foundations.
By the late 1800s, influenced by the grandeur of Tabriz carpets, weavers shifted toward more formal compositions, introducing centrally anchored floral medallions and precise symmetry in factory-produced examples. This medallion aesthetic remained dominant until after World War I, when Sarouk artisans introduced a transformative innovation: an open field design featuring detached floral sprays scattered elegantly across the surface.
This lighter, more spacious composition became the defining hallmark of the Sarouk tradition and gained widespread popularity in international markets. Today, Sarouk-inspired rugs continue to be woven in Iran, India, Romania, and Pakistan, maintaining the legacy of Persian artistry while appealing to collectors and interior designers across the United States.
