This antique Navajo rug is woven from hand-spun wool. Woven in an old-style Ganado pattern. We can see that this particular rug was woven pre 1940s because of the whirling logs design, which is no longer used by Native American artisans. This rug shows its age, but is still a wonderful collector\'s piece.
The whirling logs pattern, more commonly referred to as a swastika, is one of the oldest symbols used by humans, appearing in artwork, carvings and weavings for thousands of years. The swastika\'s meaning does seem to be similar across cultures, generally denoting abundance and prosperity and referring to the four geographic directions. How Hitler came to adopt the swastika is unclear, but its original meaning, which had endured for thousands of years, was forever changed. In 1940, in response to Hitler\'s regime, several Native American nations signed a whirling log proclamation, renouncing the use of the swastika from that point on because of its \"desecration by another nation of peoples\"
