Elegant Whiting & Davis sterling chain mail mesh handbag, circa 1920. This piece features a rare Dresden mesh, with very few remaining in pristine condition due to the difficulty of repairs. The purse is embellished with enamel, intricate carvings, a sapphire gemstone, and decorative fringes.

This handbag distinguishes itself from other Whiting & Davis mesh designs through its generous size and exquisite decoration. The frame showcases detailed hand carvings and poly-chrome enamel depicting roses against a sky blue backdrop. Additionally, the clutch is highlighted by a blue sapphire cabochon and refined openwork carving. The fringes at the base contribute a playful touch and dynamic movement to the piece.

A filigree link chain is attached to allow the purse to be worn on the wrist.

The dimensions of the purse are as follows: it measures 7 3/4 inches in length, with the mesh expanding to 6 3/4 inches in width at the bottom. The fringes measure 7/8 inch in length, and the frame is 2 1/2 inches wide. The chain is approximately 12 inches long.
