HOT ! Wampum Shell Rondelle

For thousands of years, Indigenous people of America’s northeast region have crafted small, cylindrical beads called wampum from purple and white whelk and clam shells. The Two-Row wampum codified an alliance between the Haudenosaunee and the Dutch in the early 1600s. The white shells symbolize the purity of the agreement and represent a river. Three beads of white wampum separate the purple rows, and those three beads represent peace, friendship and respect.  Each color portrays strong symbolism, the white is the symbol of health, peace, and prosperity and the  purple represents laws and obedience.  The effort is so great to make a bead, it makes Wampum Shell highly valuable. This shell is thought of as a living record of the Haudenosaunee. Each bead is made from the shell of the whelk sea snail and the purple bead is from the shell of the quahog, a North Atlantic saltwater clam.
