The mala (माला, Sanskrit term meaning garland ) originated in ancient India , several centuries before our era. Its use is attested from the 3rd century BC , in Hindu, Jain and Buddhist traditions, where it was used to count the recitations of mantras and to punctuate meditation .
According to legend, the Buddha advised a king to make a garland of beads and recite the Buddha\'s name on each bead, in order to calm his mind and purify his karma. Since then, the mala has become a sacred instrument of Buddhist practice, a symbol of spiritual counting , concentration and conscious prayer .
Over the centuries, the mala has spread throughout the Orient—from Nepal to Tibet , from Sri Lanka to China —adopting various forms and materials , adapted to each school and spiritual lineage.
The traditional mala consists of 108 beads , a highly symbolic number in Buddhism. These 108 grains represent:
In addition to these pearls, there are:
Some malas also have mantra counters , symbolic pendants (dorje, bell, lotus, endless knot), or carved gurus , depending on the lineage of practice.
The mala is not a simple rosary: it is a representation of the spiritual path . Each pearl is a step of consciousness , a breath , an intention .
| Element | Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| The pearls | The stages of practice | Each pearl is a moment of presence and purification. |
| The thread | The interior unit | It connects all pearls, as compassion connects all beings. |
| The guru\'s pearl | The Master and the Awakening | Point of departure and return, symbol of gratitude and humility. |
| The closed circle | Samsara and Eternity | Everything begins and ends in consciousness. |
Thus, reciting a mantra on the mala is like turning the wheel of Dharma in one\'s own mind . Each complete cycle is a silent offering , a vibration of compassion offered to all beings.
Although the traditional mala has 108 beads , other versions exist depending on the practice:
| Number | Use | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 108 | Complete Mala | Cosmic totality and purification. |
| 54 | Half mala | Shorter practice or travel. |
| 27 | Quarter of a mala | Daily prayer. |
| 21 or 18 | Wrist mala | Personal use or quick meditation. |
Each complete turn of the mala corresponds to a complete prayer , and the multiple cycles symbolize progression in the meditative discipline .
The malas are made from natural materials carefully chosen according to their spiritual vibration :
| Matter | Origin | Symbolism |
|---|---|---|
| Sandalwood | India, Nepal | Calm, purification, elevation. |
| Rudraksha | Sacred Seed | Protection, power, connection with Shiva. |
| Bone or coral | Tibet | Impermanence, compassion for all beings. |
| Rock crystal | Himalaya | Purity, clarity of mind. |
| Lapis lazuli | Central Asia | Wisdom and inner truth. |
Bodhi (seeds of the sacred fig tree) | India | Awakening, reminder of the Buddha\'s enlightenment. |
Each mala thus becomes a unique energetic tool , reflecting the personality and spiritual quest of its wearer.
The practitioner holds the mala between the thumb and middle finger , avoiding touching the beads with the index finger (symbol of the ego). With each recitation of the mantra, he slides a bead, keeping full attention on the sound, breath and intention.
When the complete cycle is completed, the practitioner does not cross the guru\'s bead : he returns the mala, a symbol of respect for the master and of returning to oneself .
This practice develops concentration (samadhi) , presence , and the inner vibration of the mantra, until the fusion of sound and silence.
The mala is both a meditation tool and a spiritual mirror . He reminds us that awakening does not reside in mechanical repetition, but in conscious presence in each moment.
The Buddhist mala is much more than a piece of jewelry or an accessory: It is an instrument of inner transformation , a companion of silence and a bridge between man and the divine .
A symbol of unity, patience and devotion, it connects the hand , the breath and the heart in the same movement - that of peace and universal compassion .
