Many marched barefoot, yet followed their commander’s example as he boarded a flatboat and urged them on. At dawn on December 26, the Continental Army struck Trenton, swiftly capturing the German garrison. The stunning victory revived American hopes and convinced many soldiers to remain past their enlistments. Against desperate odds, Washington’s daring gamble reshaped the course of the Revolution.
