The origin of the Dongding oolong (literally frozen top) tea comes from several accounts. One said that in 1855, Luguren Lin Sanxian subsidized Lin Fengchi to take a test in Fujian Province. When Lin Fengchi returned to his hometown after becoming an imperial scholar, he brought back 36 pearls from the Wuyi Mountains in return for gratitude. Lin Sanxian planted 12 of them on the mountain next to Qilin Lake and became the beginning of Dongding oolong tea.

凍頂烏龍茶的由來有幾種說法，一說1855年鹿谷人林三顯資助林鳳池到福建省考試，林鳳池高中舉人後回到家鄉時，為了報答恩情從武夷山脉帶回36珠青心烏龍的茶苗，其中12珠茶苗由林三顯種植在臺灣南投縣鹿谷鄉永隆村麒麟潭旁邊的山上，成為凍頂烏龍茶的開始。
