Detailed information on Yamamasa Koyamaen 山政小山園 - Senjin no Mukashi 先陣の昔

Bold yet refined, Senjin no Mukashi is Yamamasa Koyamaen’s signature entry-level koicha grade—crafted to excel as both a thin tea (usucha) and a thick tea (koicha). Full-bodied with a gentle character, this matcha reveals layered sweetness intertwined with a touch of refreshing astringency. As koicha, it becomes concentrated and velvety, offering notes reminiscent of toasted seeds, roasted coffee beans, and deep green richness. Prepared as usucha, it transforms into something airy and elegant—lightly creamy, pleasantly sweet, and remarkably transparent compared to its sibling tea, Shikibu no Mukashi.

To enjoy its full expression, prepare with 95°C water for koicha and 80–85°C for usucha.

The name “Senjin no Mukashi” (先陣の昔) carries the spirit of the vanguard—those who step forward first, who lead with confidence and intent. This sense of quiet strength and forward movement is mirrored in the tea’s profile: poised, balanced, and prepared to take the lead in any ceremonial setting.
