Atelier Shimura is a brand established to inherit the artistic spirit and techniques of Fukumi Shimura, a Living National Treasure and essayist. We propose a lifestyle that incorporates the soft, deep colors inherent in plants and trees.
The \"Iro-awase (Color Harmony) Stole\" is designed to let you fully enjoy these delicate combinations of natural hues. The threads, dyed with meticulous care based on specific themes, are hand-woven into stoles that serve as versatile accents for both Western and Japanese attire, in any season.
○ Plata - The Cherry Tree Here
Soft, elegant cherry blossom pink meets clear, unclouded madder red. This lovely combination, like a dreaming flower waiting for spring, is grounded by the subdued tone of alder (yashabushi). Just wrapping it around you brings brightness to your spirit and appearance.
While the cherry blossoms that bloom and scatter briefly in spring evoke longing, transience, sadness, or hope, the dye used here comes not from the petals, but from the trunk and branches in winter, before blooming. Glossy and reddish, they exude a strong sense of \"existence.\" This stole expresses not the fleeting nature of the flower, but the unwavering core of the tree that stands firm.
The title \"Plata\" is inspired by the Curutchet House, a clinic and residence designed by Le Corbusier in La Plata, Argentina.
○ Kokuu (Grain Rain)
Green cannot be dyed directly from a single plant. The green of \"Kokuu\" appears by layering indigo over yellow threads dyed with miscanthus (kariyasu). This stole is packed with the wonder and richness of plant colors that captivate us. The gray is dyed from plum branches. When this gray is used as the warp and green as the weft, the indigo emerges as a \"woven color\"—a fascinating visual effect.
The darker parts of the gray are dyed with crepe myrtle. Japanese grays have such a rich range that they were traditionally described as \"48 browns and 100 grays.\" This stole contains layers of gray, offering depth you can truly enjoy. Whether styled chic or airy, you can play with the look depending on how you wrap it.
\"Kokuu\" is a term from the 24 solar terms of the Japanese calendar. It refers to the rain that falls on the earth, embodying prayers for a bountiful harvest. It is the time when rice seedlings grow vigorously, and the scent of soil fills the air. This stole reflects the energy rising from the earth, entering the body through grain, and the blessed rain that connects it all.
○ Gencho (The Swallows)
We were surprised when a powerful yellow emerged from the lush green leaves of the wild carrot growing near the Saga Shakado temple by our workshop. We knew we had to use this color, overflowing with happiness, for a stole. We paired it with oak gray—a \"supporting actor\" color that is straight, clear, and makes other colors pop.
\"Gencho Itaru\" (The Swallows Arrive) is a micro-season in the Japanese calendar marking the return of swallows from warmer lands. It is a season of clear skies and refreshing breezes. Seeing nestlings in eaves opening their yellow beaks for food makes us want to watch over them with care. This stole captures that very scene. \"Gencho\" is an ancient name for the swallow.
The rhythm of yellow running through urban, translucent gray creates a look that is not too casual but elegantly cohesive. The fine stripes and simple, modern colors blend well with any season and suit sporty attire.
○ Hanamomo (Peach Flower)
One usually imagines a deep, rich color when thinking of indigo, but the pale blue of \"Hanamomo\" is also indigo. In a dyeing process that takes about two months, this color emerged only when the fermentation in the vat calmed down, allowing us to dye only a small amount. This stole utilizes these rare threads cherished in our workshop.
The theme expresses the moment winter turns to spring. Inspired by the Japanese micro-season term \"Momo Hajimete Warau\" (Peach blossoms begin to smile/open), which signifies the time when peach buds open after the dormant winter. You will feel the exhilaration of \"Spring is coming!\" against your skin.
The bold grid pattern and lively color combination lift the spirits. This is a piece that deserves to be \"worn\" rather than just wrapped. A fresh \"woven color\" born from weaving cool indigo with warm madder is a key feature, softly blended by the beige of mulberry and vetch. Limited to 20 pieces due to the rarity of the indigo used.
○ Mangekyo - Akane (Kaleidoscope - Madder)
A design that expresses stripes and checks through color boundaries. Imagining lines melting together, we gathered the borders of colors. The continuous layering of colors looks as if they are bleeding into one another. When wrapped around the neck, the boundaries visible from various angles shimmer like a kaleidoscope.
This stole features gradients of madder red with accents of pale yellow. Madder changes its impression dramatically between dark and light shades. Packed with the many faces of madder, this stole shifts its colors airily and lovably.
