Detailed information on Tenugui, TAKADA no HAMONO

Tenugui 手拭いTAKADA no HAMONO

A 100% cotton Tenugui designed by Mitsuaki Takada and crafted in Sakai.

A Tenugui is a traditional Japanese flat-woven cotton cloth that has long been part of everyday life. It is used for wiping, wrapping, or laying beneath objects, valued for its practicality and refined simplicity. It is also well suited for knife care, allowing the blade to be wiped gently without leaving unwanted fibers behind.

This Tenugui is made in Sakai City, the same city where Takada\'s workshop is located. He has long known of Sakai\'s rich history with Tenugui. Now, he has finally found an opportunity to bring them into the Takada world.

The dyeing method used is chūsen, a traditional technique that became widespread during the Meiji era. Dye is poured directly onto the fabric, and artisans carefully apply each color by hand. The result is a soft texture and deep, even coloration that permeates both sides of the cloth. Only high-quality 100% cotton is used.

The design is by Mitsuaki Takada himself. His aesthetic vision and the hand towel artisan\'s technique blend together, quietly permeating the fabric to create a single work of art.

We are honored to directly receive and sell these tenugui, imbued with his unique worldview, from Takada himself.
