A characterful survivor from the late 1600s, this English oak side table embodies the rustic elegance and enduring craftsmanship of the period. The thick plank top, rich with age and patina, is supported by boldly turned legs united by stretchers — a classic structural feature offering both stability and visual rhythm.
The surface bears the marks of centuries of use, including a graffiti-style scratch-carved “W” to one corner — a poignant, possibly personal inscription that adds a layer of mystery and human connection. Whether the initial of a long-lost owner, craftsman, or later admirer, it invites speculation and storytelling.
The oak has mellowed to a deep, warm tone, with wear consistent with age and honest use. This piece would have served as a work or writing table, and now offers a compelling accent in any interior that values authenticity and historical depth.
Provenance: England. Late 17th-Century, circa 1680.
Material: Oak. Peg-joined construction.
Condition: Structurally sound with wear, marks, and surface abrasions commensurate with age. The carved “W” is visible but unobtrusive, adding character without compromising function.
Dimensions: Width: 36 inches / 91.5 cm Depth: 21¼ inches / 54 cm Height: 26¾ inches / 68 cm
Ideal for collectors of early oak, period decorators, or anyone seeking a genuine piece of 17th-century domestic history.
