Detailed information on Japanese Sharpening Stone – Rough (#300)

These premium Made-in-Japan sharpening stones are an excellent choice for anyone seeking consistent results, long-term durability, and precise sharpening. Carefully selected for their quality and fine craftsmanship, they are essential tools for keeping your leatherworking blades in top condition.

We offer three grit levels:

  • Rough #300

  • Medium #1000

  • Fine #6000

These versatile, water-based whetstones are designed to handle a wide range of materials, including tempered steel, stainless steel, high-speed steel (HSS), and more.

Tips:

  • Flattening is key: Use the rough #300 stone to flatten the #1000 and #6000 stones regularly. A flat surface ensures even sharpening.

  • Use with water only: Soak the stone before use, and keep it wet while sharpening. Do not store it soaked, wipe off moisture and air dry in the shade after use.

  • Sharpen on a stable, flat surface to prevent slipping.

  • Do not rinse off the “sharpening water” from the #1000 and #6000 stones, it acts as a lubricant and helps refine the blade.

  • Do rinse off the “sharpening water” from the #300 stone, as the coarse particles can damage fine edges.
