A documented example from the iconic Hotel Nacional in São Conrado, Rio de Janeiro, this executive desk embodies the architectural discipline and material authority that defined Brazilian Modern design at its height.
Designed by Jorge Zalszupin for L’Atelier in 1970, within the landmark hospitality project conceived by Oscar Niemeyer, this model was originally placed either in the guest suites or administrative offices of the Hotel Nacional. As such, it represents not only refined craftsmanship but a direct connection to one of Brazil’s most significant modernist interiors.
Executed in richly grained caviúna hardwood, the desk reveals the dense warmth and expressive veining characteristic of this prized Brazilian species. The wood has been professionally refinished, preserving natural patina while enhancing clarity of grain and maintaining a satin matte surface true to the period. The composition is architecturally balanced: an open workspace to one side and a disciplined bank of drawers with contrasting white Formica fronts and circular recessed pulls to the other—an elegant dialogue between structural rigor and modern utility. The original heritage plaque further reinforces its provenance.
Following the Hotel Nacional commission, L’Atelier introduced the celebrated “Hotel Line,” expanding this visual language across complementary tables, benches, and seating—underscoring the importance of this project in Zalszupin’s oeuvre.
For collectors, this desk offers more than function. It is a historically grounded statement piece—decorative in silhouette, commanding in proportion, and deeply connected to Brazilian architectural history. As featured in the photographs, the matching armchair from the same Hotel Nacional commission is available separately or as a set, allowing for the acquisition of a historically coherent and visually striking interior grouping.
An exceptional opportunity for collectors of Brazilian Modern design, hospitality provenance, and museum-quality furnishings.
