Detailed information on \"TOMI\" TUMBLER 2015 MOLD-B


Timo Sarpaneva continuously explored and experimented with glass expression, pursuing new techniques.
In the process, in 1963, he drew inspiration from a scorched wooden mold, a byproduct of another experiment, and developed this expression into his artwork.
In the same year, he created unique pieces by combining scorched wooden molds.
Subsequently, in 1964, he unveiled one of his representative works, the \"FINLANDIA\" series.
The uneven, irregular surface texture, where the scorched wooden mold\'s surface was directly transferred to the glass, became a trend that continued until the mid-1970s.



This piece was designed in 1965 as one of the earliest products using a similar expression and was manufactured from 1969 to 1975.
For mass production, it is likely that new molds were created from the scorched wooden molds using graphite or similar materials, and at least three different types of molds were used.

Timo Sarpaneva majored in graphic design at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki.After graduating, he won second prize in the Riihimaen Lasi glass design competition in 1949 and was invited to be a glass designer. However, negotiations broke down due to the humiliating offer of providing designs without compensation.While seeking a path as a glass designer, he obtained work in 1950 for Ahlstrom, Iittala\'s parent company, designing exhibitions, show windows, and graphics.In the same year, he considered leaving Ahlstrom after receiving a request for glass design from Holmegaard in Denmark, but Ahlstrom proposed a path as a glass designer at Iittala, a group company, and he changed his mind.He began his career as a glass designer at Iittala in 1951.He received the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1954 for his initial refined, highly artistic art pieces, and again in 1957 for \"i-line,\" practical mouth-blown glass released in 1956.Together with his close friend Tapio Wirkkala, who had been active as a designer at Iittala since 1946, he elevated Iittala to a leading Finnish brand.At Iittala, he was also active in graphic design, including posters, brochures, and packaging.Notably, the logo he designed for \"i-line\" later became the brand\'s logo and was used as a symbol of iittala for a long time.He was active in a wide range of fields including art glass, practical glass, ceramics, graphics, and textiles, and is one of the outstanding designers representing Finnish modern design.
