Story Behind the Art: Indo-Tabriz rugs are a refined expression of Persian artistry interpreted through skilled Indian craftsmanship. Although woven in India, these rugs draw their visual heritage directly from Tabriz, a legendary weaving city in northwestern Iran known for technical precision and intricate design. Authentic Persian Tabriz rugs are prized for their history and extremely tight knotting, while Indo-Tabriz rugs offer a more accessible luxury alternative that preserves the same classical aesthetics. The most recognizable pattern reproduced in Indo-Tabriz rugs is the Mahi or Herati design, featuring a repeating diamond lattice filled with stylized fish or leaf motifs. These hand-knotted wool rugs are typically constructed using the Persian asymmetrical knot with a wool pile over a cotton foundation. One of the key differences between Persian and Indo-Tabriz rugs can be felt on the reverse: Persian examples tend to have a stiff, compact back, whereas Indo-Tabriz rugs are slightly more flexible, making them easier to place while still delivering the look of a traditional oriental area rug.
