A pair of late 19th-century French folding campaign-style chairs, in stained wood turned to a faux-bamboo profile with hand-caned seats and backs. The warm chocolate-brown frames show lively nodes and ring turnings, offset by honey-toned cane that catches the light. One chair has had its caning redone, which appears slightly lighter in tone than the other. Cotton tension straps serve as lightweight arms, finishing in small turned terminals at the front posts. These straps could be later replacements, as such chairs were often fitted with leather, yet they lend a relaxed character reminiscent of sunroom or veranda lounge seating. The frames have developed a beautiful, mellow patina over time, with soft rubbing to the stain and minor nicks along the edges that add to their character. The chairs remain stable and fold smoothly, though we would recommend gentle or decorative use consistent with their age.
