The most special of finds and a wonderful piece for a collector, this antique Georgian period necklace of graduated hand carved red Mediterranean Coral (Corallum Rubrum) beads dates to around the 1820\'s or so.
Meticulously fashioned with a miniature precision, each of the little beads is prettily shaped in sympathy with the branch shape of the natural Coral and turned to the terminals, cut so the alternate beads sit across from each other. Many hours of work would have gone into her creation! A necklace such as this would likely have been a souvenir from the Grand Tour when visiting Naples, the ancient centre of the Coral industry in Italy.
The rare triple strand measures 14 inches at shortest (sitting around the base of the neck), graduating to 16.5 inches and fastens with a hand made \'pineapple\' silver clasp. It is illegal to harvest Mediterranean Coral nowadays in order to protect the remaining Coral reefs.
